Car and truck ownership comes with responsibilities: not only does one need to know and understand the rules of the road, but he also needs to understand how to keep his vehicle in top working order. The fact is that proper care and maintenance of an automobile not only insures that it will last longer; it also helps to make it safer.
Many regular maintenance tasks can be done easily by almost anyone. But specific Automotive Tools are required in some cases. In other situations the home mechanic will find that a set of wrenches and a socket set will be essential when doing small maintenance jobs.
Some of the basic things that will need to be checked and maintained included fluid levels. Generally the oil will need to be changed about once per quarter or at least topped off. Keep a check on the windshield fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid level, the acid in the battery and the fluid in the radiator. These checks should be done when the engine is cold, depending on how.
The air pressure in your tires should be checked and maintained. Believe it or not, proper air pressure can make a difference in your gas mileage. Windshield wiper blades should be replaced at least annually but sometimes more often than that.
The belts and hoses on cars do wear out and sometimes this happens unexpectedly. To avoid being caught off guard it is best to make a habit of looking under the hood of your car on a monthly basis. Just a quick inspection for signs of wear and tear or leakage can prevent a breakdown that can ruin an entire day.
When tires are thin and worn it's hard to get good traction on the road and that is a major safety issue. Checking your tread wear is not difficult. In fact, there is a tool for this. If tread wear is not even you may have a wheel alignment problem.
Brake pads should also be checked periodically for wear. This of course is another safety issue but keeping brake pads in good repair can save on more expensive repairs down the line. The reality is that proper vehicle care not only promotes a longer life of your automobile, but it also saves you money, and if you can do the repairs and maintenance yourself you will save even more.
